“It’s been awhile since I’ve painted landscapes and still life compositions. I had fun revisting these older subjects. Though I am not a landscape painter, the clouds, colors and wide-open spaces of Northern Arizona are so well-suited to brush and canvas. The still life pieces play to my whimsical side and I cannot provide any rationale for painting them other than that they make me happy. Looking at the show as a whole, the underlying feeling is joy; joy in the bigger picture and joy in the small moments.”

“Just East of Flagstaff you will find many miles of black buttes and mesas that describe the open landscape on the Navajo Reservation. These sculptural iconic buttes and mesas fill the landscape with changing skies. I strive to capture the enduring time of land with my oils. The black rock changes color as the sun sets in the west and lights up the forms. Travel with me and see my favorite scenes that are East of Flagstaff.”

“I start each painting by choosing a color palette. From there it’s anything goes.

I know there will be texture, either real or implied, and maybe a shape of an actual object, but I never set out to paint a certain image. I just play – I add, subtract, think, squint, step back, get closer, leave the room, come back later…it all works out in the end.”

“I am fascinated by birds as shapes. Every bird is basically the same, but each type is so different and varied. They are symbols of freedom, character and intelligence. The same is true for the great variety of trees. I use them as shapes in my stylized paintings. The lines correspond to the rings used to date the ages of trees. I love to create colorful textured backgrounds for these paintings, then I populate them with my stylized birds and trees to create a whole.”
